It’s good news for the applicants of the Canada Spousal Temporary Resident Visa (TRV). Canadian immigration department, i.e. Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is now processing the Temporary Resident Visas (TRVs) for spousal applicants in just 30 days! This means if you plan to apply for this visa now, your spousal TRV application can be processed in just 30 days. Moreover, Spousal TRV applications are being processed with an impressive 90% approval rate. Find out more.
Get the Spousal TRV in just 30 days
This new measure pertains to spousal applicants who have applied for Canadian Permanent Resident (PR) Visa. Hence, now, such applicants, instead of being obligated to stay in their home countries during the processing period, they can now come to Canada while their PR application is being reviewed.
In other words, this measure will allow Canadian permanent residents or citizens with spouses and dependents abroad to join up their families at an earlier stage, helping their integration into Canadian communities.
However, it is crucial to note that spouses and dependents on a TRV are not allowed to work or study in Canada until they get approval for a PR visa or obtain a valid work or study permit.

Outstanding approval rate
On May 26, Canadian Immigration Minister Sean Fraser revealed the new service standard. He also disclosed that spousal applicants for TRV have achieved an impressive approval rate of over 90%. This high approval rate can be credited, in part, to the increased utilization of advanced analytics by IRCC.
Minister Fraser emphasized that this technology allows Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to analyze numerous factors in an individual’s application. With this, they can better evaluate the likelihood of the applicant’s eligibility for PR.
Family class sponsorship Processing time
At now, there is a processing time of 12 months for PR applications via family class sponsorship. However, now that spousal TRV applications are processed within just 30 days, and IRCC has 60 days processing time for work permits, it may take as little as just 90 days for a sponsored spouse, partner, or dependent child to be able to land in Canada and start working while they wait for decision on their PR application.
Any Canadian citizen or permanent resident may be eligible to sponsor a spouse, common law, or conjugal partner for Canadian Permanent Residency if they sign an undertaking agreement to become financially accountable for the sponsored family for numerous years. The amount of funds needed to sponsor changes when there are dependent children to support too.
Other Key measures taken by IRCC for family reunification
Find below key family reunification measures taken by Canada recently:
- In addition to TRV announcement, IRCC has introduced a new provision stating that spousal applicants and their dependent children, residing with their sponsor in Canada and holding temporary resident status, may now qualify for open work permits.
- Eligible people can apply for an Open Work Permit (OWP) once they have submitted a complete application for PR to IRCC. Earlier, the eligibility for an OWP was limited to spousal applicants who were applying for sponsorship from within Canada.
- Moreover, the Immigration Minister has recently announced that open work permit holders, whose permits expire between August 1st and the end of 2023, will have the chance to extend their permits for 18 months via a facilitated process at no cost.
- This extension will be available for spouses and dependents of most temporary workers, spouses of foreign students, and candidates for PR.
