What is new TEER System of Canada 2023?

The New TEER system is a grouping of occupations under the new NOC 2021 system of Canada. The NOC (National Occupational Classification) system plays an important role in the functioning of key Canadian immigration programs, such as Express Entry, PNP, etc. It classifies or categorizes the various occupations, which exist in the Canadian labor market. Consequently, it helps Canadian immigration applicants to choose the relevant occupation while registering their profile in an immigration program.

What is NOC system?

Find below a few key points to understand what the NOC system is and how it is relevant to you as a Canadian immigration applicant.

  • The NOC or National Occupational Classification System is the classification or categorization of all the occupations, which exists in the Canadian labor market. ESDC and Statistics Canada prepares this classification, and renews it every 10 years.
  • The NOC system helps job seekers and employers in Canada defining and understanding the nature of a job or work in Canadian job market.
  • If you are applying for visa in Canada through popular immigration programs, i.e. Express Entry OR PNP, you need to choose relevant NOC occupation from Canada’s NOC occupation list to register your profile and apply.

From November 16, 2022, Canada has adopted a new NOC system 2021 replacing the old NOC 2016 system. The NOC system is based on TEER category system.

How new TEER System work?

The IRCC switched to NOC 2021 Version 1.0 on 16 November 2022. Find below key features of the new TEER system under NOC 2021:

  • Under this new system, a 6-categories represent the TEER (Training, Education, Experience, and Responsibilities) needed to work in an occupation,
  • New TEER system introduces 5-digit code for each NOC occupation, replacing Old 4-digit occupation codes
  • IRCC has updated the eligibility criteria for all programs that use new TEER system under NOC 2021

Comparison of New TEER System categories Vs old skill type or level

The Canada immigration programs, which were previously using NOC skill type or levels, are now using TEER categories from 16 November 2022:

  • Most jobs stayed in the TEER category that is equal to the skill level in the table given below.
  • Few jobs have changed to a different TEER category.
  • Skill level B jobs have become TEER 2 or TEER 3 jobs.

You may find your occupation under the new NOC Occupation List to find out what TEER category it belongs to.
